Prepare to be transported in this work of realistic historical fiction, 最后一头战象 (zuì hòu yī tóu zhàn xiàng) The Last War Elephant , when elephants were trained to fight alongside humans in combat during World II in the extreme south of Yunnan province in China.
In 1943, during a battle to defend their home, the Thai ethnic group lost all but one war elephant. With broken hearts, they took the elephant home and took great care of him. The elephant recovered from a serious injury and lived happily with the villagers. One day, the very old war elephant became restless. He urged his trainer 老丁 to put his old battle saddle on and started walking away. Worried, villagers came out to send him off. 老丁and his son followed him. Unlike most elephants who walk to their ancestral burial grounds, the old war elephant walked to the same battlefield he fought on 26 years ago-where his comrades were buried! He dug a whole in the dirt and buried himself, as老丁stood by respectfully, celebrating his incredible loyalty and friendship with the Thai people.
