Luka® can read these books!
If there was ever a series we doubted could be translated into another language without losing its charm, Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie series (开心小猪和大象哥哥 kāi xīn xiǎo zhū hé dà xiàng gē ge) would be it! However, Chinese translator 戴永翔 has done a great job preserving the essence of Mo Willems' signature style in these translated editions.
Why we love these books:
- Simple dialogues in large speech bubbles
- Repetitive phrases and common expressions
- Carefully scripted text in a conversational style
- Most importantly, kids find them laugh-out-loud funny
All these features make these books incredibly engaging beginner books for even the youngest Chinese learners. Children who knows about 300-500 Chinese character would feel an incredible sense of accomplishment and build their reading confidence as they complete each 57-page book!

Differences between the two Elephant & Piggie book sets we carry:
Both Elephant & Piggie Book sets are excellent translations that have preserved Mo Willems' books' playfulness, simplicity and humor. There is, however, one main translation difference: The 17-book set translated the elephant's name "Gerald" phonetically into a Chinese name "杰拉(jié lā), “ while the 5-book set translated "Gerald" into "小象"(xiǎo xiàng Little Elephant). Although "杰拉(jié lā), " as a translated name, is not considered frequently-used vocabulary, each character by itself is high frequency character: "杰 (jié, excellent", and 拉(lā, pull).
Is my child ready for this set?

Ages 1+ will enjoy having these books read to them either by Luka® or a caregiver.
"Read by myself":
The limited text per page and the prevalence of common language make it a good "bridge book" for readers. The involved plot and detailed illustrations will capture the interest of experienced readers ages 3+.

Consider adding Luka®, the reading robot, to your order. Luka® reads 70,000 books in Mandarin Chinese!
Luka reads all 17 books in this set in Chinese, and 8 books in this set in English also (just tap Luka's head twice to switch languages). The 8 books that Luka reads both in English and Chinese are:
