妈妈的红沙发 A Chair for My Mother 

Rosa's mom works at a diner. Every day when she gets home from work put the coins they earned that day into a big jar to save up for a big comfortable chair.  They need to save for a new chair because all of the furniture in their old apartment was destroyed by a fire. Although their friends and new neighbors were very generous to provide them with all sorts of other furniture and household items, they did not yet have a comfortable chair or sofa. One day, the big jar is filled to the top, they take it to the bank to exchange the coins for bills and then they go shopping to find the perfect chair!

When Rosa gets paid for helping out in the diner... "every time, I put half of my money into the jar." 

Gratitude in the face of tragedy

When the neighbors help furnish the new apartment after the fire Rosa's grandmother gives a speech..." 'You are all the kindest people,' she said,'and we thank you very, very much. It's lucky we're young and can start all over.'"
