"小羊上山" (xiǎo yáng shàng shān), or "Little Lamb (Little Goat) Goes Up the Mountain," is one of the most recommended leveled reader in simplified Chinese popular among children age 3-9 in mainland China. 

Crafted by a team of experts and kindergarten teachers, these authentic readers capture the essence of Chinese childhood experiences. The carefully curated content spanning 60 books across 6 levels, using 390 fundamental Chinese characters, encouraging hildren to embark on a journey of independent reading at a young age.

From original stories to classic fairy tales and science narratives, each level incrementally challenges young readers, enhancing their literacy skills with engaging themes and gradually increasing complexity. 

Currently, only Levels 1-6 of this series have been published. Higher levels are still under development. All 60 books are written using 390 essential Chinese characters, providing valuable repetition for children learning to read Chinese.

Leveled readers are crucial for children learning Chinese, as they offer progressively challenging texts tailored to the learner's developing language skills, effectively building vocabulary, grammar, and reading confidence.

We recommend building your child's Chinese literacy with two or three sets of leveled readers, such as 小羊上山 and the Disney Learning I Can Read Series, both curated by Chief Editor Ms. Bei Sun. Each set approaches vocabulary development in unique ways.
